Expanding the KidSafe List

There may be many other types of seafood that would qualify for the KidSafe Seafood list, but there is currently insufficient data on contaminant concentrations to make this determination.

In order to develop the KidSafe Seafood list, we conducted an extensive literature review for federal, state and academic studies on PCBs and mercury in seafood.

As the FDA does not test commercial seafood except for salmon, farmed catfish and canned tuna for PCBs, data on PCB concentrations is especially limited.

KidSafe Seafood is encouraging producers to seek independent testing to help fill this data gap. One option is to contact Seafood Safe, a third party testing program for mercury and PCBs.
